My favorite time of year is spring, and the month of May. Every morning is a treat when I sit at the kitchen table and look out the window upon my world. The much needed rain this morning enhanced the fresh mowed grass and fragrant plum blossoms, with the Grand Trunk caboose in the background. I wish May would last longer than a month.

Read all about it here. Our very first article in the newspaper. Thank you to Karen Gruber of the Midland Daily News.

On March 5, 2013 the ground breaking began here at Nestle Inn for the installation of a Grand Trunk caboose owned by Sandra Vining. You can see the photos here of the prep and set. We have a lot of work to  make it look presentable. In the meantime, having a caboose as a lawn ornament takes some getting used to. But I think we can manage.

These scones are wonderfully soft and delicious. Try them with your favorite tea and add some homemade jams and jellies

Nestle Inn Scottish Scones

1 3/4 cup flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/4 cup sugar
1/8 tsp salt
1/2 cup raisins, dates or dried cherries
5 tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup sour cream
1 egg
1/2 tsp pure vanilla
2 tsp orange zest

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
2. Sift the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt into a large bowl. Add butter into flour mixture and mix well until mixture is crumbly. Stir in dried fruit.
3. Mix together milk, sour cream, egg and vanilla. Pour all at once into dry ingredients, and stir gently until well blended. Do not overwork.
4. With floured hands, pat scone dough into balls, depending on what size you want. Place onto a parchment covered baking sheet, and flatten lightly. Let rest for about 10 minutes.
5. Bake for 10-15 minutes in the preheated oven or until the tops are golden brown. Remove and cool on wire rack. Serve warm or cold with or without jam.

It is the time of year when many are gathering with family and friends to celebrate holiday, good food, and time off work. It is during this time usually when rubbing elbows with our fellow humans is a little easier to handle. Good cheer is a little more plentiful.
This increased kinship would be nice if it extended to every day for everyone, and not just certain times of the year. Owning and operating a bed & breakfast allows me to enjoy the benefits of a holiday season every day. Each time a guest arrives at Nestle Inn it is a wonderful experience. The majority of people are here to visit family or friends, they are not working and they are of good cheer. Three major ingredients in a recipe for happiness.
I wish all my guests of 2012, as well as previous years, all the best for 2013. Life can deal us some obstacles, but it's our choice of what we do with them.

My best friends are here for the weekend. When they are here the kitchen smells awesome from their cooking. At this moment Mary is making German Tomato Soup. The house is warm from the wood stove, soft music is playing in the background, the cooking smells wafting through the house and wonderful company make for an excellent day at the Nestle Inn Bed & Breakfast.

A two-day event, sponsored by the Beaverton Area Business Association, is planned for November 16 & 17, 2012. All downtown businesses as well as several others in the area will be open from 9am to 5pm for a community-wide open house. Each business will offer something special for shoppers. There will also be a drawing held for prizes. Those individuals who visit at least five businesses will be entered into the drawing and have a chance to win.
Nestle Inn Bed & Breakfast as well as the Crippled Chicken will be open for those two days this month. Those interested can take a tour of the bed & breakfast. The Crippled Chicken will have a variety of items on sale for those looking for a good bargain.
